Shape and Story take Form
It began with Antarctic Ice
Dr. Peter created his first ice thin section from ice collected at the Allan Hills ice field in Antarctica where meteorites can be found. Blue ice, faint bluish ice, and white ice from the ice fields all had uniquely different ice crystal shapes, air bubble contents and color.
Polarized light became a paintbrush
Peter together with NASA education formed a winter camp at Lake Placid, New York where ice and snow were used to enhance teacher science teaching tools.
Ice sampled at the shallow Cascade Lake revealed in thin section, petal-shaped ice forms that appeared to be the result of a spiral growth pattern seemingly connected to the bubbling of methane gas, derived from decaying vegetation, during the freezing of the ice.
Peter realized that dramatic ice compositions could be created. He further refinedĀ his understanding leading to the development of the FRIZIONS.
